Password protection for Softwares (.exe)

 http://phpprogrammingtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/securelock.jpg

We have always been concerned about hiding a particular file or folder from someone for definite purposes. I won't go into that now. But have you ever had a thought that how can we lock an .exe or Windows executable file? Suppose you share your computer with someone else in the office or hostel and its understandable if you don't want them run certain programs that you need.  For example, you probably do not want somebody else to run your tax preparation software, personal finance or email programs. So what do you do? Creating another account in Windows is child's play really. So you can not trust it. Here is where Kakasoft software comes in.

How Does it Work?

When protecting a program, KaKa ExeLock modifies the binary executable itself, so that it first asks for a password and runs the program only if a valid password has been entered. It does not change the Registry database, nor does it save the password in hidden files or disk sectors. Also, it does not matter whether you protect the program on your hard drive or a floppy disk.

What I liked about it

Unlike other software of this category this one doesn't work under a particular user but system. What it means is one just can not go to CTRL+ALT+DEL -> Processes and stop this service. This would have been ridiculous. but Kakasoft has covered itself up. You have a back-up option too in case you want to revert.
Try and tell me how did you find it.
You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
