How to install Android OS on Windows?

Android OS is an open source mobile operating system owned by Google and developed by the Android developer community. Android is based on Linux, and it is widely used in mobile phones, and also waiting for its entry into tablets and netbook computer segment. Though it is a mobile OS, we can virtually run Android ISO image form, that we can use to boot Android from a USB drive or CD. We can also use a desktop vitalization application like SUN VirtualBox and install (virtually) or operate Android OS in Windows and other OS platforms. Though we cannot exactly reproduce and use Android just like as in mobile phones, give it a try if you are planning to buy an Android device or curious to know about its user interface, menu options, etc. Here we will point you to the Live Android download, and help you to install Android OS in Windows, virtually using SUN VirtualBox application. on Linux, Intel Mac and even in Windows. Live Android is a special compilation of Android OS in a CD

After download, unzip LiveAndroid.zip and join the two .iso files with HJsplit for Windows.

Now download and install SUN (Now Oracle) VirtualBox for Windows from here.

After installation, Open VirtualBox and click on create new virtual machine .

Create Android Virtual Machine

Enter the name as Android and Operating system choice as Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7. In all upcoming steps, click next after competing with all the required instructions given below.

Set memory. (keep it as default)

From radio buttons, create new hard disk.

Select Dynamically expanding storage .

Set Android virtual disk location and a suitable size (say 20GB)

Now click Finish to create a new Android VirtualBox.

Now from VirtualBox interface select Android and click start .

First run wizard opens.

In next step, select media source as image and browse to the location of the joined Live Android .ISO image .

Let the wizard complete. It will open the the Android OS home (given below) after execution. When we click mouse anywhere, it will pop-up a box- click capture and continue.

5 fast & lightweight Linux Distro...

Dedicated Linux servers are known to be fast and efficient, but Linux on the desktop is also becoming more and more popular these days because of its much improved speed.

After Google Chrome OS was announced and with the promises or goal of making it fast and lightweight, I know it will someday be compared with some of the fastest and lightest Linux distributions that are currently available. So I’m thinking I may never be impressed with Chrome OS if it can't beat or at least be at par with any of these distros:

antiX
I once dubbed antiX as "The Fat-free Mepis" because it is indeed the lighter and faster version of SimplyMEPIS. It runs really quick even on my ancient laptop since it is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors. antiX uses IceWM and Fluxbox as its window managers and it is loaded with handy software packages.

SliTaz
SliTaz is considered by many as the world’s smallest 'complete' desktop distro. Despite its miniscule size, it comes with several useful applications out-of-the-box like text editor, audio player, pdf viewer, web browser, image editor, DVD/CD ISO Burner, and a lot more. The latest version now uses Openbox instead of JWM as its window manager. I've used SliTaz GNU/Linux 1.0 before and I must say that its speed is awesome.

Puppy Linux
Puppy Linux is one of the top Linux distros in terms of popularity. Although it has quite a small footprint, it is loaded with great features. You can boot it as a Live-CD needing only a few MB of RAM, install it on a USB Flash drive, and even set it up on a hard drive.

SLAX
SLAX is another distro to beat in terms of speed. Though it utilizes KDE desktop environment, it's still faster than most distributions with lightweight DE. And don't be fooled by its size because it has good amount of pre-installed software applications making it ideal for day to day desktop use.

Damn Small Linux
Damn Small Linux (DSL) is damn small indeed. Still 50MB in size, it remains one of the most well-known Linux distro. They said that DSL is light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of RAM so imagine it running on your quad core computer with 2GB of RAM. I've tried and tested DSL before, and view it as a good thing that comes in small package because I'm very happy with its overall features despite its tiny size.

If Chrome OS can't top or equal any of the distributions mentioned above in terms of speed and simplicity, then I have a reason to be disappointed since I don’t see the point of Google creating a whole new Linux distro when they can just improve on what's already available.

It has been three months since Google revealed their plans to develop an open source and cloud based operating system, Google Chrome OS. The Google Chrome OS mainly targets netbooks, and the internet enabled Smartphones. UNIX based Google Chrome OS will run on 32-bit processors and ARM CPUS that is used in mobile devices. The special feature of Google Chrome OS is that its cloud based. In a cloud environment, the user needs to be on the internet to enjoy the full benefits. Information, files, applications and all other things will reside on Google servers, and users need to be online to access them.

Therefore, you can use the OS in Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. Google Chrome OS is being developed by the Chromium community. Different hardware vendors have access to the latest repositories of Chrome OS, and they can make special versions of the OS to meet their specifications. If you are a developer you can also download the Chrome OS and build your own image. A popular gadget blog recently released a Chrome OS image that you can download below.

You will need a Gmail account to sign into the operating system. Google Chromium OS boots into an interface that look like the Chrome internet browser. Actually, the OS is nothing but Chrome browser with some online web apps or Chrome web extensions. One of the problems with this cloud OS is that the files and other user information are saved online. So there should be a dedicated and fast internet connection to access the services. Google will offer enough online storage space for all user files but unavailability offline storage will of course remain as a question.

We earlier shared a method to run Google Android OS on Windows with VMware and SUN VirtualBox. Similarly, here also you will need either VMware or VirtualBox to run Google Chrome OS on Windows. Use operating system choice as Linux during virtual machine creation, and select to boot from exiting hard disk and add Chrome OS image location.

Dell has released a Dell mini (Linux) compatible Google Chrome OS preview image. This image is 7.5 GB in size. You will need to flash it to an 8 GB pen drive using commands available at the Dell Linux support site.
