How to create own Linux distro (LiLi USB Creator)?
LinuxLive CDs have long been well known as a handy tool in PC repair.Personally I’ve used Linux CDs dozens of times to repair Windowsproblems, from virus scans to file retrieval to partition adjustments.As great as Live CDs are, they still have a few drawbacks, like aninability to save any new files or changes. Bootable USB sticks solvemost of the problems with Live CDs. You can write to them, change thesoftware or the whole system without burning a new CD, and carry themeasily wherever you go.
There’s a new (Windows only, strangely enough) software tool out called LiLi USB Creator.LiLi makes it incredibly easy to create your own customized bootableLinux system on a USB stick, and even run it from within Windows usingan portable copy of Virtualbox that’s included on the installation.Impressed? I am.
I ran LiLi on Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3 and a 2GB Kingston USB drive. You can download the installer here.It’s a ZIP file and there’s no installer so you can just run itdirectly from wherever it was extracted. Once loaded you’ll get themain LiLi screen where all your choices are made.
Step 1: Choose a USB Key
Ifyour USB drive isn’t already connected, connect it now and wait a fewseconds before hitting the blue refresh button. When you click thedrop-down list, you should see your flash drive in the list. Make sure you’re choosing the correct flash drive,as the program also lists your hard drives, and we certainly wouldn’twant to go wiping any of them. Which reminds me – in case this isn’tyet clear, this flash drive will be wiped clean so make sure there’s nothing important on there before we proceed.
Step 2: Choose a Source
LiLineeds to know what you plan to use as the base of your system. This isone of LiLi’s big strengths in my opinion. You can choose to use a LiveCD ISO file you already have, a Live CD in your CD-ROM, or to have LiLidownload an ISO for you. This last option is particularly impressive,as LiLi provides a list of some of the compatible distros and willautomatically fetch and check the files it needs.
Asfor me, I went with Fedora because… well… pretty much just because Ihaven’t used it in a while. If you chose to let LiLi download acompatible ISO for you, then you’ve got a little time to wait while itdownloads. Now might be a good time to make a snack, read a book, orbetter yet – browse articles on MakeTechEasier.
Step 3: Persistence
Atthis point, we can take advantage of the fact that we’re using a USBdrive and not a Live CD. By setting some space for persistence, we cannow save file and settings changes directly on to the USB drive. Thisis also the cause of some confusion when creating these live systems.
Forclarity, we’ll use my 2GB Kingston flash drive as an example of howthis all works. It’s actually about 1.9GB, and the files from the ISOwill be using up about 700MB, so according to LiLi that leaves about1.1 GB for persistent files to be saved. The math doesn’t quite add up,but I would guess that LiLi is using up a little more space than justthe ISO contents for things like VirtualBox (discussed below). Theslider bar in the screenshot above lets me choose how much of thatspace I really want to use. Unless you’ve got other plans for thatspace, you probably want to slide the bar all the way up.
If yourUSB drive is larger than 1GB and LiLi doesn’t let you move the sliderpast 0MB, just reformat the entire USB drive, reload LiLi and try again.
Step 4: Options
Thefirst item in the Options section is whether or not you want to hidethe system files on the USB drive. The only relevance this has iswhether or not Windows will show the Linux system files on the flashdrive. The benefit is that you won’t have to worry about a convolutedmess of files and directories on the drive if you just want to runVirtualBox (which we’ll cover in a moment). The down side is that itwould be more difficult to access or edit those files from Windows,should you want to. Neither choice will have any significant effect onhow your Linux system runs.
The second option is whether or notto format the USB drive in Fat32. Unless you have a specific reason notto, I’d recommend you allow the format to be certain that the drive isbeing wiped clean and installed correctly.
The last option is oneof the really unique and interesting things about LiLi. As I hinted inthe opening paragraph, LiLi is capable of adding a portable copy ofVirtualBox to your USB drive. For anyone not familiar with VirtualBox,it’s a high quality free virtualization program. With VirtualBox on thedrive, you’ll be able to run your new Linux USB system from withinWindows, without rebooting. I’d recommend checking this option, so thatyour flash drive can be as versatile and useful as it can be.
Step 5: Create
Beforeclicking the lightning bolt to begin, there are a few things to checkto make sure we’re not about to cause a disaster. First, make totally certain that the device you chose in Step 1 is the USB drive, and that you don’t mind wiping its contents.Next do a quick glance at the traffic light icons in the bottom rightcorner of each step. Each light should be green, indicating it’s goteverything it needs in order to proceed. When ready, hit the lightningbolt icon, and go make yourself another snack.Running your new USB Linux System
Ifyou’ve followed this guide closely, then you now have two ways to startyour new system. The first is from within Windows, using VirtualBox.Open My Computer to your flash drive, and you’ll see a Virtualbox folder. Open that and run Virtualize This Key.That will launch the portable VirtualBox to your Linux image and youcan use your shiny new Linux system from a contained environment withinWindows. Keep in mind, this method does give the benefit of being ableto use both OSes simultaneously, but Linux will most likely be MUCHslower here than if it had been booted on its own.
Theother method is to boot the USB key as intended, as its own OS. To dothat, you insert the USB drive into whatever computer you’d like toboot, and restart the computer. Some computers may require you to openthe BIOS settings to include USB in the boot devices. Others may giveyou an option when starting up like Hit F12 for Boot Menu, or something along those lines. Any fairly modern PC should be capable of booting from a USB drive.
Presumingall went well, you should now have a portable, self-contained,customizable USB Linux system installed on your USB drive that can betaken anywhere. This can be useful in repairs, file recovery, virusscanning, or just showing off. Files saved to the USB drive willpersist across multiple reboots.
Other than a booting glitch whenI tried LiLi with Crunchbang (which may or may not have been LiLi’sfault), everything seems to work smoothly. I was very impressed byLiLi’s simple yet powerful user interface, and the developers haveclearly put a lot of thought and effort into making LiLi a qualitypiece of software. I’m a little surprised it only runs in Windows, buteverything it does, it does well.

How to use/recover damaged pen drive/usb?
Have you suddenly encountered with the problem that when you plug inyour USB drive, the Removable media shows up but when you try to open it, it returns with the message “Please insert a disk in to drive H:”.
If yes then you have been on right tutorial page.
By applying this simple method you’ll have 80 % chance to get back your USB drive hardware.
This works only in the above error condition. If the windows doesn’t detect your USB drive, then there is probably flaw in the USB media.
Please keep in mind that, you’ll have to lose your data when following this tutorial.
Plug in your USB drive.
Go to Start - My Computer, right click on My Computer icon and click on Manage menu.
Computer Management window will pop up. Click on Disk management under Storage tree menu.
Now at the right side of the window right click on your removablemedia. right click on your removable media and choose Change Drive Letter andPaths.
Now in new window choose any drive later that is not taken by any media (M:, N: , :K: etc).
Click on ok button and close the management window. Try opening your pendirve. There may be the chance to have your pendrive recovered if this method worked.
If the problem still prevails then follow the above tutorial butinstead of choosing Change drive letter and paths, choose Fomrat andgive a quick format to it.
Now you’ll have finally lost your data but the pendrive is safe in your hands.

How to boot multiple OS from USB?
How to create a Multiboot USB Flash Drive that you can use to Boot Multiple OS from USB?
Here is a tool for you that can do it.
With the help of this tool, you can use/boot multiple Operating System from your USB .
Name of that tool is "MultiBOOT ISOs".
MultiBoot USB Menu (Simply select an ISO from USB).
MultiBootISOs Works by utilizing a Syslinux Bootloader chainloaded to GRUB4DOS. At Startup, the following Boot menu is presented
Note : You must manually add (or extract in some cases) the ISO Files to your Flash Drive.
Be aware – boot conflicts may arise when more than one ISOs contents are extracted to root. If you experience a conflict, let me know!

1. Run MultiBootISOs-v1.5.5.exe following the onscreen instructions.
2. Download some ISO Files (listed above) and place them on your USB Drive.
3. Restart your PC setting it to boot from the USB device
4. Select the ISO you want to Boot from the Menu and enjoy!
That's all there is to it. You should now be booting your favorite ISO files from your Multi-Boot USB device!
Boot Errors: While trying to run an ISO from USB, If you get a Boot error saying:
Error 60: File for drive emulation must be in one contiguous disk area
You'll need to defragment your ISO using one of the following tools:
contig - Command line tool to defragment ISO files.
wincontig – GUI tool to defragment ISO files.

Booting Xp With A Pen Drive
There are times when a minor error in the Windows Registry or a Virus Infection, can make your system unbootable. In such a condition a properly configured USB drive on hand with Bart Lagerweij's free utility (BartPE), is a handy replacement for windows operating system.
BartPE will give you a complete Win32 environment with network support, a graphical user interface (800x600) and FAT/NTFS/CDFS file systemsupport.
Don't confuse BartPE with Microsoft's Official Windows PE. BartPE has got some interesting features as compared to Windows PE and it's a freeware.
Requirements To Install BartPE:
:: USB Flash drive with at least 256 MB of storage capacity.
:: The files from your Windows Installation CD-Rom.
How It Works:
:: PE Builder, condenses the original setup data for Windows XP into a slender operating system that is ready to run from or a USB flash drive.
:: This compact, portable version of Windows includes all the important system tools for dealing with a PC emergency.
:: You can even add other programs to this collection, such as the media writing tool Nero Burning ROM or an anti-spyware package such as Ad-Aware SE Personal, during the installation process.
Steps Involved:
:: Download the latest PE Builder version (self-installing package) and install it.
Start PE Builder (pebuilder.exe) and insert Microsoft Windows XP installation/setup CD, it will condense the setup files into your pen drive.
:: At the main PE Builder dialog, select the "Pen Drive" option. Hit the "build" button. PE Builder will now ask you to create a BartPE directory, answer with "yes".
:: PE Builder will now start building BartPE. This will take a few minutes. You will see a lot of files getting copied and/or decompressed, into your pen drive. If the data verify was correct and there where no errors reported you can boot the Pen Drive.

Install Windows in USB (Pen Drive)
To keep the introduction short, Microsoft denies that booting Windows off a USB drive works.

Anyway, the web is full of those. I was wondering about the same thing, as i did not want to put a Windows partition on my Linux.based work laptop, and thought it was a good idea to run Windows XP off a USB Hard drive that i just plug in when i need it, and boot from it. To put a long story short, this is exactly what i do now, thanks to the fantastic research of the people credited below. However, it took me significant time to figure out all the painful little problems, and i was not fully happy with the current official guide by Dietmar (no pun, he was the first to make ANYthing public). I wanted an easy guide that allows creating a modified version of the Windows XP CD, for painless and transparent installation to as many systems as you want.
This page is the result of my work. Have fun!
What works? Basically, everything as far as i can see. After completing this tutorial, your Windows XP install should directly boot off your USB-drive, and be fully upgradable, DirectX games will run, all apps i tested work like normal, speed is the same as with a real HDD (you need USB2 though) - so it is in fact a fine solution as far as i can see.

Requirements
- An existing Windows install for carrying out the steps in this tutorial
- A USB2-compliant Hard disk drive (or a big USB2 stick, see remarks below)
- An original Windows XP CD (tested only against SP1 so far, but reported to work on other versions)
- A registered version of WinISO (or any other software that allows direct editing of ISO files)
- The Microsoft CAB SDK
- A CD-burning software that can handle ISO files. I like the free burnatonce
How To:
Summary:
We will dump the contents of your original Windows XP CD , extract a few files from the Image using ISO modification software, edit the files, and put the modified versions back on the ISO. The resulting ISO image is burnt back onto a CD media, and can then directly be used to install Windows on your USB drive.
I am also covering a few pitfalls that happened to me, in hope they will save you a bit of time.

1) Does your computer support booting from USB?
Usually, if its an option in your BIOS boot sequence menu, the answer to this is yes. If its not there, look for BIOS updates. If you are not sure, proceed and see what happens ;-)
2) Sorting out the "Bootability" of your USB-Drive
Connect your USB drive to your computer, directly, without a Hub. Then, shut down your computer, disconnect any other hard disk drives from it, and insert your original Windows XP CD into the drive. Start the installation, and proceed to the section where you are allowed to pick a hard drive. If it goes beyond the partition selection, your drive is already fine for booting Windows XP. If not (seems to be the cases with many of the Freecom USB HDDs for example), you will get an error like "Windows is unable to find your drive, partition, data etc bla". This is usually not a big problem. All you need to do is "properly" format the drive. Reboot into your normal Windows, and get this HP tool , and use it to format your HDD completely. I chose NTFS format, worked fine everytime i tried. After this, my drives are recognized as valid installation devices by the Windows XP installer.
(In fact, i did not manage to create a USB primary partition with FAT32 that was recognized as being installable)

3) Dumping the original Windows CD into an ISO File
Pretty easy one. Simply open WinISO, and select Actions - Make ISO from CDROM, and save your CD image.
4) Extracting the files we need to work on
After the CD dump is done, close and reopen WinISO. Then, open the ISO file you just created using File - Open.
Now, click the I386 folder, and select the following files (Ctrl key to multi-select)

Select Actions -- Extract and put the resulting files into some folder to work on them.
5) Unpacking IN_ files
Use the Cab SDK (from the command line) for extracting the contents of the .IN_ files. Each of them contains exactly one .inf file. If you are unsure how to use the Cab SDK, here is an example command line: "cabarc x USBSTOR.IN_" . You should end up with three new files in the folder, called:
· usb.inf· usbport.inf· usbstor.inf
You can now delete the .IN_ files.
6) Editing the files
This is the main job. i ll also try to explain a bit whats happening. Use a simple Texteditor like Notepad.

This file is loaded on the initial install step by the Windows XP CD installer. In this file, we will change the way Windows treats USB devices during system setup -- the default is to only treat them as input devices during installation -- we will change this to include mass storage driver support (which needs to be loaded into the installer much earlier in order to work).

7) Repack the inf files into their original IN_ format
If you have not already deleted your extracted .IN_ files, do so now. They need to be replaced. Open a DOS shell again, and navigate to the folder with your changed files. Then exceute the following commands:
The three IN_ files should now exist again.cabarc n USB.IN_ usb.inf
cabarc n USBPORT.IN_ usbport.inf
cabarc n USBSTOR.IN_ usbstor.inf
Congratulations. All out modifications are done.
8) Inject the changed files into the ISO
Open your Windows CD image again with WinISO. Navigate to the I386 folder, and delete the following files from the ISO, saving the changes to the ISO afterwards:
· DOSNET.INF· TXTSETUP.SIF· USB.IN_· USBPORT.IN_· USBSTOR.IN_
Just to be sure all is updated in the ISO, cloase and repoen the ISO in WinISO. Now, again go to the I386 folder and select "Add Files". Now add your changed files, in detail:
· USBBOOT.INF· DOSNET.INF· TXTSETUP.SIF· USB.IN_· USBPORT.IN_· USBSTOR.IN_
Save the ISO. You are done.
9) Burn the ISO back to CD
10) Install Windows XP from the CD
Shut down your computer. Disconnect ANY internal and external hard drives (so Windows cannot find them during installation and mess up their Master Boot Records hehe). Some computers will have trouble to boot without an internal HDD attached, check in your BIOS and, if possible, remove the HDD from the boot sequence and set the USB Harddisk as the first boot device, and the CDROM as second.
Also, now connect your USB Harddrive directly to the computer, without any Hubs in between.
Windows should install just fine, with the exceptions noted below.
Issues you will encounter during installation:
· During driver installation, the USB drivers will prompt you, as they are "not certified" - This is normal. Our changes invalidated the checksum, and therefore the driver is no longer signed. Just press "yes" a couple of times.
· Upon completion of the install, the system will complain once on the first bootup that the pagefile does not exist. You can ignore this for now, as Windows will work fine without it. People are looking at fixing this issue, but its not critical for now.
Once everything is up and running , shut down and reconnect all your drives.
